こんにちは！本日もリスニング日和ですね！
今回のリスニング日和は、米国トランプ政権で大統領首席補佐官Chief of Staffを務めたマーク・メドウズさんの在任中のインタビューです。トランプ政権の最後の１年は新型コロナウィルス対応にてんてこまいでした。トランプ大統領をはじめ、政権関係者が次々と感染し、対策がいい加減だ、隙がありすぎると各方面から非難される日々・・・。2020年10月末のインタビューで、結局何人感染してるんだとテレビ司会者から聞かれた時の答えが、今回、練習に使用する音声です。
当時はコロナ1年目で世の中の雰囲気も暗く、しかもあと数日で大統領選挙というタイミングで、大変苦しい受け答えをするメドウズさん。まずお決まりのChinaの一言を出し、さらにポジティブな点（死亡率の低下）をアピールして切り抜けようとしています。そこらへんの話の転回方法にもご注目ください。ちなみに彼自身、このインタビューの直後に感染しました。対策してても、なってしまうものはなってしまうのですかね。気を付けます…

今回は冒頭から1分弱を使って練習します。
①Warming-up Shadowing 録音なし
スクリプトは見ないでシャドーイングしましょう。録音は不要です。 英語音声を再生し、聞こえてきた音をしっかり声を出して正確に発音します。激しい運動の前の準備体操です。
②Short Reproduction 録音なし
まずは文章を短く切ってリプロダクションをしましょう。必要ならスクリプトを確認しながら。録音は不要です。
・ネイティブ英語音声を/のところまで再生し、聞こえた英語をしっかり発声してリピートします。
・一語一句同じでなくても、意味が同じなら別の表現を使ってもよいです。自分のスピーキングが正しい文法になっているか自信がない場合はオウム返しの方が安心。
・あれ今何て言った？？という時は、もう1度音声を再生して確かめるか、それでもだめなら、スクリプトをチラ見して確認を。
まずは、この程度の短さでリプロダクションに挑戦しましょう。

It just goes to show you /that we continue to face this enemy /that came from China./
And yet what we also know is, /the one area that — where we are rounding the corner is /really the death rate as it looks to that. /Our ability to handle this /has improved each and every day, each and every month./ And when there were estimates /that as many as 10 percent of the population that got this /would actually experience a fatal result, /we’re now down to 2.6./
Every death is too many. /But, hopefully, we’re going to get this to the point /where it’s not as lethal as the flu./

すごく回りくどい構文に感じるかもしれません。ご自身でもう少しシンプルにしてもいいですね。as it looks to thatなんかは省いてよいかも。experience a fatal resultは要するに死ぬという意味なので、would dieとしても。直接的な表現でちょっときついですが。
スクリプトを見ないでも滑らかに1文再現できるようになるまで練習しましょう。リズムやイントネーション、息継のタイミングまで真似してみてください。伝わりやすい英語スピーキングになっていくと思いますよ。自分のパフォーマンスの録音を聞いて、聞きやすい英語になっているかチェックすることもお忘れなく。
